~ Edgar Allan Poe’s Love Life ~

Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe (August 15, 1822 – January 30, 1847) had become Edgar Allan Poe’s wife when she was age thirteen and he was age twenty-seven.  The couple started life as first cousins.  Some biographers have suggested that the couple’s relationship was more like the relationship held between a brother and a sister.  In January 1842 Virginia contracted tuberculosis and died from the disease five years later at age twenty-four in the family cottage located in New York.  Along with other family members, Virginia Clemm and Edgar Allan Poe lived together in the cottage for several years before their marriage as well as afterwards. The couple often moved between Baltimore, Philadelphia and New york in order to accommodate Poe’s employment.   After Virginia’s death, her body was eventually placed under the same memorial marker as her husband’s in Baltimore, Maryland.  Edgar Allan Poe became despondent and turned to alcohol to cope with the disease and eventual death of his wife.
